<h2>The Last Holdout Finally Cracks</h2>Until December 2, 2024, Citi Group and Vanguard had stood firmly opposed against crypto. However, on that date, Citi Group began allowing New York residents to buy and sell cryptocurrency. Soon after, Vanguard did too. For years, Vanguard has been a strong anti-crypto voice. Its former CEO, Tim Buckley, said repeatedly that he would never allow Vanguard customers to hold any digital currency in their retirement accounts. Until December 2, 2024, Vanguard prohibited customers from buying digital currencies through any third-party exchange. On that date, however, Vanguard opened the door to cryptocurrency by making available on the company's platforms about 50 million accounts, representing about $11.7 trillion in assets, access to Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana. Finally, one of the largest and last remaining traditional financial institutions has listened to the growing public interest in the world of cryptocurrencies.<h2>The Fortress that Held</h2>To provide more context, you need to understand what Vanguard meant by this. Vanguard was a pioneer of sound, long-term investing with index-based mutual funds that were affordable to everyone, long-term investment horizons using a buy &amp; hold strategy, annual portfolio rebalancing, and the idea of avoiding trends in the investment space. The first Bitcoin Spot ETFs launched in January 2021, yet when they did for Vanguard, they did not create an option for their own, nor did they offer an option for any Spot ETF from anyone. As a client of Vanguard, you could not access BlackRock's IBIT, Fidelity's FBTC, or any other ETF related to cryptocurrency, even if you asked. Vanguard also restricted access to traditional Bitcoin futures ETFs. The clear message was that Vanguard protects clients from digital assets even when that means restricting access to those assets. Imagine you’re a Vanguard investor when you see BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF success with $70 billion, and you're not able to invest like your buddies through Fidelity. Your investment adviser mentioned that diversification within digital assets is important for your portfolio. But Vanguard does not allow for Bitcoin ETF access in your retirement, so you will need to open a broker account, transfer your existing Vanguard holdings into that account, invest in a different Bitcoin ETF, and manage two separate sets of transactions at the same time. These actions are not by accident, and you are part of an unwritten investment principle.<h2>What Changed: Three Cracks in the Wall</h2>It wasn't because Vanguard developed a sudden fondness for <a href="https://www.lbank.com/trade/btc_usdt" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bitcoin</a> that they turned around. They had no other choice. It simply became too expensive to maintain the status quo (not supporting crypto ETFs) than to backtrack (support crypto ETFs) as it was clear that the demand had been steady with no signs of change. Spot Bitcoin ETF growth had far outpaced any other type of ETF during their first twelve months, where they achieved the highest value of any ETF launch ever at $125 billion. BlackRock's IBIT had grown to nearly $100 billion at one point before stabilizing at a nearly $70 billion value. All of these customers were not day traders, but these were the same customers that Vanguard would be dealing with as they were growing their own businesses. Not only did the success of these exchange-traded funds (ETFs) signal the loss of customers for Vanguard, but it also sent a clear message that Vanguard was losing customers to BlackRock. In 2024, Tim Buckley, the former CEO of Vanguard and naysayer towards crypto, resigned from his position. Salim Ramji was appointed by Vanguard and is a former employee of BlackRock, where he helped start IBIT, the most successful Bitcoin ETF to date. Initially, Salim supported Vanguard's position against crypto, which shows the irony of the founder of IBIT promoting the value of crypto ETFs as he was now saying that crypto ETFs do not have a place on the Vanguard network. As the market matured, the meaning of that excuse as well. Today, the Vanguard excuse list looks like a shopping list with everything checked off: liquidity supported, products seasoned through volatility, processes ready to go and regulatory issues sorted out. What does this mean? It means there is no legitimate reason to respond negatively to the Vanguard list.<h2>What This Actually Means</h2>Vanguard has chosen a very compromisable approach by offering 3rd party ETF access to cryptocurrency products, but will not offer its own ETF product to their clients. Vanguard views crypto currencies as commodities and therefore classifies them as Gold. They will still provide access to Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana and <a href="https://www.lbank.com/trade/xrp_usdt" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">XRP</a> via an ETF but not memecoins and other speculative assets. Vanguard's decision effectively resolves this problem for many of its 50 million clients who do not need to open additional brokerage accounts to purchase cryptocurrencies. Moreover, it provides a symbolic victory for cryptocurrencies because now virtually all of the large institutional trading firms offer access to this asset class; therefore the argument that "respectable finance does not support cryptocurrency" is no longer valid. However, while symbolic victories and real-world impacts are certainly different, the Vanguard method of investing in and holding a long-term buy-and-hold strategy has a large amount of familiarity among the Vanguard investor base, who are not crypto enthusiasts or day traders but rather the more conservative type of investor who would generally hold a balance in their 401k account. It's an odd time in the cryptocurrency space, with nearly $1 trillion being wiped off the market since its all-time high in October. Those who made investments into Bitcoin ETFs at the market peak will be looking at a loss. Vanguard has entered the fray but they have arrived at this stage following the initial enthusiasm or disappointment of the hype. The fact that Vanguard does not label their ETFs as cryptocurrency speaks to how confident they are in this space.<h2>The Late Arrival</h2>Vanguard, which has been slow to enter the Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) market, has missed out on the approximately 70 billion dollars in assets currently owned by BlackRock’s BTC ETF due to its lack of participation over the past two years. This situation has been caused by Vanguard’s inability to pursue the new business model for Crypto ETFs, which has caused the company to lose any first-mover advantage it had prior to entering this rapidly evolving industry. Vanguard's existing business model of lowering fees and focusing on cost efficiency is what has allowed them to keep their competitors at bay in a market where all players are focused on offering low-cost investment opportunities for consumers. Vanguard will simply not be able to regain the market share lost to competitors; the only benefit it can derive from this new product offering is to stop the flow of customer assets out of the company. Vanguard has recognized that it is losing market share to competitors who have the ability to offer Crypto ETFs at a lower price; therefore, any effort by Vanguard to enter this market is an attempt to halt this loss of market share before it is too late. While operational issues exist as well, the structure of Crypto ETFs will present a challenge to Vanguard, as Crypto ETFs will settle in cash, while all Stock ETFs will settle in-kind. As a result, the operational complexities associated with custodial relationships will cause greater risk of counterparty exposure during periods of extreme volatility. During such periods of volatility, there will be an increased level of accuracy in pricing for Crypto ETFs versus Stock ETFs of four-to-one. While Vanguard is unable to eliminate or mitigate the potential operational difficulties associated with Crypto ETFs, it has a very high cost or risk of remaining on the sidelines of this new industry.<h2>Why Resistance Always Breaks</h2>The real story here is not about Vanguard or Bitcoin, but about the way in which the institutional ideologies of today will yield to the demands of clients as customer needs dictate. Vanguard held firm to their policy on cryptocurrencies for two years, declaring them to simply be speculation and thus artificially denying client requests. However, recently, with $125 billion flowing into the products of others, many clients opening second accounts and a new CEO coming on board from the maker of the single most successful product in the crypto space, Vanguard's uncompromising ideology has been shown to carry a substantial monetary cost. Financial innovation does not occur overnight, but through the competitive pressures exerted by other companies. Vanguard did not make the decision to include Bitcoin in its offerings because they believed it would produce any increase in revenues. Instead, it simply woke up to the fact that their inability to accommodate clients' requests for Bitcoin would ultimately lose them business. What is perhaps most revealing is that Vanguard's decision to change the way it perceived crypto is perhaps the greatest evidence to date that the crypto-etf market is truly entering the "mainstream." Since even the most staid, conservative and largest players in the investment marketplace are now partially capitulating and changing their ideologies, the days of having anything to protect or hold in the way of honor are now numbered. Advancement in public finance accessibility has to be considered as a priority if cryptos are to advance as legitimate financial assets. As such, today all major exchanges allow for buy side access to cryptocurrencies using whatever traditional money is available to them (Vanguard, US Trust &amp; Fidelity). Prior to Vanguard's changing its position on allowing its clients to now purchase cryptos through ETFs, the answer was not whether or not crypto-traded ETF products exist; it was that we had reached the established "end" goal, which was to increase access to crypto-traded products by expanding those services from traditional investment managers, to owners of traditional investment products (Discount Brokerage) that have been allowed to perform that business for their clients (Brokerage-Model). Vanguard has expanded its client base by no longer limiting clients to said client's brokerage business model. Through this decision, Vanguard has cleared the last barrier for full access for traditional retail investment clients to be able to trade in cryptocurrencies via ETF. Now, we are all waiting to see whether the large masses of retail investors will take advantage of this opportunity. This barrier for continued retail access has only existed for less than 24 months.
