When Bitcoin’s value plunges, it is usually the heavy hitters in the industry that choose to take advantage of a tumultuous environment. Most recently, when Bitcoin dipped below $60,000 for the first time in over a year, the larger investors (known as whales) immediately got in on the action, buying approximately 40,000 Bitcoins and thereby helping initiate a 17% recovery of Bitcoin’s value to around $70,000. This is an example of how these whales can shape recoveries in the marketplace, but it also raises further questions about whether or not that recovery can continue in the future. <h2>Who Are Bitcoin Whales?</h2>Whales are defined as anyone or any entity who possesses a large amount of Bitcoin, usually at least 1,000 BTC, and they range from institutional investors to early adopters to exchanges. They will play an important role in determining the price of Bitcoin due to their large supply. Usually, whales will accumulate (purchase) Bitcoin during a market decline, seeing the dips as a buying opportunity, as opposed to a panic selling opportunity. Retail (or small, individual) investors generally sell off when they see a decline in Bitcoin, therefore creating market fluctuations due to the differing views on how the market should react. In the case described above, the mid-tier whales (those who own between 1,000 and 10,000 BTC) purchased approximately 22,000 BTC during this time, while larger whales (those who own between 10,000 and 100,000 BTC) purchased approximately 18,000 BTC. <h2>The Recent Price Dip Explained</h2>Over the last few months, Bitcoin has experienced a substantial decline, falling approximately 30% from its previous highs and then back down again after reaching approximately $58,000 in value. This was caused by many factors including Bitcoin ETF outflows (the sale of previously purchased ETFs) and retail destruction due to flood waters outside New York City where many retailers operate (these events were also partially responsible for the drop).Historically, such events have led to liquidation events (widespread selling of security), however Bitcoin's price recovery was due, in large part, to institutional purchases (accumulation). This is likely to contribute to further prices increases as well as continue some of its downward pressure during future cycles. &nbsp;The attached image is indicative of both the downward and upward movements of Bitcoin's price at different times during the dip and subsequent recovery. Three whales transferred BTC into a long-term store (wallet) from short term holders in 3-4 days.The accumulative buildup of BTC is planned by whales because at the bottom of the inflationary cycle (not recovering quickly), there are spikes (inflows) of BTC being deposited into the whales’ wallets. The majority of large accumulation occurs through the process of being able to buy into an average market price of BTC significantly lower than normal, which creates a strong likelihood that they have created a profitable investment through this process. This is Glassnode's Cost Basis Distribution Heat Map for the period which highlights what has happened to the total supply of BTC over this time frame. (Source: Glassnode) <h2>Impact on price recovery</h2>The demand for BTC helped support the recovery from the dip and analysts suggest that it was intentional (by a kühl buy wall) because if there had not been any support, it is likely that this dip would have dropped lower than it actually did.&nbsp;While BTC has somewhat rebounded from the dip, the rebound is not universal. Long-term holders are still selling BTC in most instances. <h2>Lingering Downside Risks</h2>Bitcoin continues to attempt a retracement above $72,000, but it has struggled to maintain momentum for the past few months. Bitfinex exchanges are experiencing increasingly large sell orders, and all signs suggest that significant buyers of bitcoin (whales) hold bitcoin at losses (emphasizing why previous prices were not "retail" but rather near-term highs). One other risk factor that should be noted involves potential ETF selling and macroeconomic factors related to central bank monetary policy. Should support at the $60,000 level fail again, a further price decline towards $40,000 is definitely conceivable. <h2>The Bottom Line</h2>Through aggressive accumulation and subsequent recovery of 17% in value off of the $60,000 level, large investors have collectively purchased at least 40k Bitcoin.While the moves of whales indicate confidence among these large holders of Bitcoin, the continuing overall uncertainties and risks within the cryptocurrency markets will continue to impact the overall market.When the cryptocurrency market is in a period as volatile as it currently is, whale trades such as these can offer large investors beta opportunities for their positions (dips) — so keep a close eye on on-chain data for your next opportunity.
