The FOMC kept interest rates steady at their previous level for the second consecutive meeting following the reductions that occurred during the fourth quarter of 2025.<a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/fomccalendars.htm%20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Federal Reserve FOMC Calendars and statements </a><h2>FOMC’s Decision to Maintain Rates</h2>On March 18, 2026, the FOMC decided to keep the target range for the federal funds rate unchanged at 3.5% to 3.75%. This was in line with what most people expected, including what market participants were anticipating (i.e., as evidenced by tools such as the CME FedWatch). In the policy statement provided by the FOMC, it mentioned that the overall level of economic activity remains strong and there are recent indicators showing continued/prolonged strength, although there have been some signs of weakness. After three measurements of 25 basis points on September 14, October 11 and December 12 of 2025, resulted in rate cuts increasing above prior levels, the next rate cut to be effective on January 25, 2026 will be at that same rate; however, no further cuts will occur until after March 20, 2026. Fed officials have committed themselves to determining their future monetary policy in a data dependent manner based solely upon the data related to labor, inflation, and general economic climate.<h2>Jerome Powell’s Assessment of the Economy</h2>Jerome Powell, Chair of the Federal Reserve System, stated during his post-meeting press conference from March 18 that the U.S. economy is performing “pretty well” overall despite global events’ associated uncertainties. Additionally, he noted that consumer spending and other forms of activity remain strong, while businesses continue to invest modestly. According to Powell, there are some conflicting indicators in other parts of the economy. The labor market is definitely slowing down; employment has slowed down with jobs being created at a slower rate than in months past, and an increase in the unemployment rate over the past two months. Inflation also remains above the Federal Reserve's 2% long-run target. Powell reiterated that the Federal Reserve's two-track approach is to keep employment high and prices stable, and that it will not move quickly on changes to current monetary policy until risks become more quantifiable.<h2>Impact of the Ongoing Middle East Conflict</h2>The FOMC meetings were mainly about the conflict between US and Israeli military activities against Iran since Feb 2026. And the disruption of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz (which is an important shipping route for about one-fifth of global oil). The price of oil has increased dramatically in recent weeks due to the war in Ukraine, with Brent crude prices increasing by approximately 15-50% as of the first week of March (depending on the level of escalation), and some regions in the United States seeing average gasoline prices above $3.20/gallon (plus even higher diesel prices). While Powell specifically cited the potential for increased energy costs to briefly raise inflation rates over the short term, evidence of a longer-run impact on either economic growth or employment appears limited or short lived to date. “Uncertainty around the length of the disruptions and if supply chains will have prolonged strains is preventing any one from being able to really know what will happen consequences-wise,” Powell noted. Although the US has been helped due to the amount of energy produced in the domestic market, elevated gas prices are almost like an ‘oil tax’ and could potentially slow consumer spending if that kind of pricing continues for an extended period of time.<h2>Updated Economic Projections (Dot Plot Insights)</h2>The FOMC issued its inaugural Summary of Economic Projections (SEP) for 2026 as part of its March decision. The median forecast projects that there will be at least one 25-basis-point reduction in interest rates in 2026, which is consistent with the December 2025 projections, but indicates that more easing should occur until interest rates reach their long-term level, which is projected to be near the low end of 3% by either 2027 or 2028. <ol><li data-list="bullet">There were some minor adjustments made to the forecast for GDP growth in 2026 and 2027; GDP growth was revised slightly higher for each year of the forecast, from a median of 2.3% and 2.0% to now a median of 2.4% for 2026 and 2.3% for 2027.</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Unemployment Rate projections for both years remained unchanged at 4.4% for 2026 and increased slightly to 4.3% for 2027.</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">The adjusted forecast for the year-end levels of PCE inflation (overall and excluding food and energy) was also revised upward from 2.4% and 2.5%, respectively, to now being 2.7% for both years, with an increase to 2.2% expected for 2027 from 2.1%.</li></ol> The changes to the forecasts provide an overall balanced perspective: stronger growth expectations offset by a higher level of inflation caused in part by higher energy prices. The dot plot shows that most of the forecasts lie between the current level of forecasting outcomes and slightly below this level at the end of the year.<h2>Market Reaction and Broader Implications</h2>There was no major reaction from the stock and bond markets to the Fed's decision to keep rates unchanged. As a result, we saw very little movement in stock indexes and Treasury yields were also unchanged right after the Fed's announcement. This decision gives both the economy and the Fed time to see if inflation moderates over time or if geopolitical risks escalate. Consumers and companies have faced increased borrowing rates on home mortgages, credit cards, and business loans as a result of continued interest rates. At the same time, the economy appears to be able to sustain these interest rates without plunging into a subsequent decline in activity due to the continued strength of consumer expenditures and investment activity in the economy. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) plans to base its next meeting on current indicators of monthly employment, inflation as indicated by PCE (Personal Consumer Expenditures) measures and Middle Eastern geopolitical concerns. If inflation moves convincingly toward the 2% target or labor markets begin showing more weakness than anticipated, there is a possibility of rate changes occurring sooner than expected. In the current global economy where uncertainty exists, the FOMC has a steady policy stance that offers support to future activities but remains vigilant to the threat of renewed price increases.
