Geist WBTC, or GWBTC, is a token that represents Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) within the Geist Finance ecosystem. Geist Finance was a lending and borrowing protocol operating on the Fantom network. The core concept of Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is to allow Bitcoin (BTC) holders to use their BTC within other blockchain ecosystems, particularly those that support smart contracts like Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana, and others. WBTC is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain, meaning it is compatible with Ethereum's decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. The primary function of WBTC is to bridge the liquidity and value of Bitcoin to these other networks. Each WBTC token is backed 1:1 by actual Bitcoin held in secure storage by custodians. This 1:1 backing is verifiable through a "proof of reserve" system. When a user wants WBTC, they send Bitcoin to an approved merchant, who then requests a custodian to mint an equivalent amount of WBTC tokens on the desired blockchain. The reverse process, called burning, allows users to convert WBTC back into Bitcoin. The Geist Finance platform, where GWBTC was utilized, allowed users to lend, borrow, or use tokens as collateral. However, Geist Finance ceased its operations in July 2023 following a Multichain exploit. The exploit caused a discrepancy in the value of bridged assets, making it impossible for Geist Finance to continue its lending services due to the potential for severe debt for holders of non-Multichain coins.
