STAKED CELO (STCELO) FAQ
What is Staked Celo (stCELO)?
StakedCelo is an open-source, Celo-native liquid staking protocol. It enables users to stake their CELO tokens, contributing to the network's security and consensus, while receiving stCELO in return. These stCELO tokens are liquid, meaning they can be used across various dApps in the Celo ecosystem, unlike directly staked CELO which is typically locked. stCELO is an ERC-20 compatible, non-rebasing token.
How does liquid staking with stCELO work?
Users deposit CELO into the StakedCelo protocol and receive stCELO tokens representing their staked assets. The protocol then stakes the deposited CELO and accrues Epoch Rewards, which are shared proportionally among all stCELO holders. The value of one stCELO, measured in CELO, increases over time as these rewards are compounded within the protocol. The protocol is non-custodial, meaning users retain control of their funds.
What are the benefits of using stCELO?
The primary benefit is that stCELO tokens remain liquid and transferable, allowing users to participate in other DeFi activities (like lending, trading, or yield farming) while still earning staking rewards. stCELO holders receive a share of the Epoch Rewards. StakedCelo simplifies the staking process by automating validator group selection, making it more accessible. The protocol is also completely non-custodial, ensuring users maintain sole control over their assets.
Why is 1 stCELO not equal to 1 CELO?
stCELO is a non-rebasing token, meaning the number of stCELO tokens in a user's wallet remains constant. The value of each stCELO token increases over time in relation to CELO as the accrued Epoch Rewards are compounded within the protocol. This means that one stCELO will be redeemable for more than one CELO (including accrued rewards) when unstaked.
What are the risks associated with staking with StakedCelo?
Potential risks include smart contract vulnerabilities or bugs, even though the code is open-source and audited. General staking risks also apply, such as the underlying tokens being locked for a withdrawal period (3 days for Celo), making users dependent on secondary markets for instant liquidity. However, Celo's mechanism means that principal is generally not at risk from validator slashing when using StakedCelo.
How does unstaking work and how long does it take?
Users can unstake their assets by returning their stCELO to the protocol. There is a waiting period of three days for the unstaked CELO to become available, which is based on the Celo protocol's implementation. After this period, the CELO (including accrued rewards) can be claimed.
