Virtuals Protocol serves as a decentralized infrastructure primarily on the Base network, with Solana support planned. It empowers users to create, co-own, and monetize autonomous AI agents. These intelligent agents are designed to perform diverse tasks, engage on social media platforms, and even manage their own on-chain wallets, acting as a launchpad for the next generation of AI-driven applications.

The VIRTUAL token is fundamental to the protocol. It is required as a creation fee to launch new AI agents and forms the base liquidity for all new agent tokens in locked pools. Furthermore, VIRTUAL acts as the routing currency; users must first swap their funds into VIRTUAL before acquiring any agent token. It is also used for inference payments, enabling users to compensate agents for their services like research or content generation.

The VIRTUAL token is designed with deflationary mechanics. A key aspect is that every newly created AI agent token requires VIRTUAL to be paired with it in a permanent, locked liquidity pool. As the number of AI agents grows and more VIRTUAL is continuously locked away to provide this foundational liquidity, the available supply of VIRTUAL on the open market naturally decreases. This mechanism creates sustained deflationary pressure on the token.

Within Virtuals Protocol, "Prototype" agents are those currently in their initial phase, accessible via a bonding curve and yet to reach a significant level of liquidity. "Sentient Agents," on the other hand, represent high-performing agents that have "graduated" from the bonding curve. These agents have achieved sufficient liquidity and community engagement, allowing them to be freely traded on the open market, signifying a more advanced stage of development and adoption.

Virtuals Protocol implements a 1% trading fee on agent token transactions. This fee is crucial for the sustainable operation of the ecosystem. The revenue generated from these fees is directly allocated to cover the ongoing compute costs necessary for the AI agents to maintain their autonomy and functionality. This includes expenses like API calls and server infrastructure, ensuring the agents can remain "alive" and actively perform their designated tasks without interruption.

Virtuals Protocol acknowledges the common debate regarding the authenticity of its AI agents. While the protocol leverages an agentic framework (GAME) for their operation, the long-term vision extends far beyond current capabilities. The project aims for "multimodal" agents, evolving from their current autonomous task execution and social media interaction to eventually engaging in complex 3D environments like Roblox or the Metaverse. The roadmap includes expanding this AI infrastructure to physical robotics by 2026, demonstrating a commitment to advanced AI development.
